Green, Abundant Life

Notes from the Bower

June 2026 • Summer

Dear Reader,

Warm June (literally) greetings from the steamy Midwest!

Summer has arrived and settled in, bringing thunderstorms, pervasive humidity, and every shade and tint of green imaginable. The variety is remarkable! The abundance of summer always makes me feel so alive.

Our resident phoebes are on their second nesting, with five eggs this time—one more than their first successful brood. Each morning, I step out the back door with a cheerful, “Good morning, Mrs. Phoebe!” I like to think she has come to look forward to my greeting, as she watches me politely, remaining on her nest, completely undisturbed.

This month’s edition of Notes brings you:

  • a reflection on the green abundance of summer and an invitation for us all to live more fully
  • a verse to sit with on the life God desires for us
  • an update from the studio as The Joyful Bower continues to grow leaf by leaf

Wishing you summer days filled with many warm smiles, joyful laughter, and beautiful growth.

💛

Notes from Nature: Green, Abundant Life

Summer surprises me every single year.

One would think that spring, bringing new life each day, would be the perfect gradual progression toward life-in-full.

But somehow, the big green giant always sneaks up on me.

One day, I’m looking at just-sprouting leaves against the sky, and the next, all the blue is hidden behind a solid green wall.

Everywhere, there is so much green.

So much life.

Walking in the woods, this reality is even more apparent. The plants, trees, shrubs, vines, and flowers—not a one of them seems concerned about what the others are doing around them.

No vine is shy to reach out its tendrils.

No shrub is worried that it is growing too close to its neighbor.

No flower hesitates, fearing it may be overshadowed.

No tree questions whether it is getting too big.

Densely crowded together, each one confidently claims the space in which God has planted it. Drawing from the nutrients of the soil, the warmth of the sunlight, and the refreshment of the rain, they throw themselves with abandon into living—just as God intended.

The abundance of green is everywhere—a riotous chorus of life singing out around me, enveloping me, encouraging me.

I am not simply an observer, but somehow connected to it all.

Now is the time, the season to live with gusto, it seems to say.

As the years seem to pass with ever more quickness, I begin to recognize the truth that all of this summer life around me is speaking.

It really is time to let go, as never before.

To let go of concerns and fears, and instead, live in even greater trust and surrender.

To not look to myself to find the answers and figure everything out, but rather to God, who has already given me the gifts and graces I need to live fully in this unique time and place where he has planted me.

And this is my hope for us, my friends: that we may let go of all that keeps us from receiving the fullness of life God has for us—peaceful, joyful, beautiful, and abundant.

That together, in all our varied forms and seasons, we may become something like the summer woods—lush, full, deeply rooted, and alive with the abundant life of God.

“
I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
— John 10:10

A very special project from this month: restoring Panda, a much-loved stuffed animal from my childhood, as a special birthday gift for my nephew. There is much joy in handing on what has been cherished, so it may be cherished anew!

Notes from the Studio: Growing Season

Behind the scenes, The Joyful Bower continues to grow.

Bit by bit, the website is slowly becoming more than a home for reflections. Soon, I’ll be adding to “Paths and Practices” with a simple Nature Gazing Guide—a practice to help you slow down and deeply see the beauty of the natural world around you in a new way.

I’ll also be opening the doors to “Art and Objects,” where you’ll find original art, hand-painted journals, prints, and notecards—all created to help bring more beauty, peace, and joy into daily life.

It’s hard for me to believe, but August will mark one full year of Notes from the Bower, which for me is a very meaningful milestone. My hope is that by then, the doors of The Bower will be opened wider, with more places to wander, receive, and enjoy.

For now, it is still quiet growth, but it is growth all the same. And I’m grateful you’re here on the journey with me!

Welcome new friends!
Welcome back, returning friends!

I’m so grateful you are here. I always love hearing from you, so if something in this month’s Notes stirred your thoughts, please feel free to hit reply and share with me.

If you are new here, know that each month, I write the names of all new readers and place them in a prayer jar on my desk—a small reminder that connection matters, and that each person who enters The Bower is received with care.

May your days be filled with peace, joy, and abundance.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.
